Red Light in the Spotlight: Coran Capshaw

June 15, 2025

Red Light Management founder Coran Capshaw started out running a small venue in Charlottesville, Virginia. He now oversees the largest independent music-management company in the world. One constant throughout his career, though, has been an abiding passion for live music.

He feeds that fixation daily by repping box-office perennials like Dave Matthews Band, Phish and Chris Stapleton, among others. But Capshaw has also extended his reach by becoming a concert promoter, label owner, merchandiser, real-estate developer and philanthropist.

In 1991 he gave DMB a weekly residency at his club, Trax. On the strength of its ever-evolving live shows, the band broke through into the mainstream within a couple of years. It's now among the most commercially successful touring acts of its generation.

From those early successes sprang Red Light, which today houses about 80 managers and more than 400 artists, including Lainey Wilson, Lionel Richie and The Black Crowes. The company has offices in Nashville, London, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Seattle, New York and Charlottesville.

Capshaw launched live-music promotion company Starr Hill Presents in 2002. It has equity in festivals including Outside Lands, South by Southwest and Pilgrimage. Recently, he partnered with Live Nation to open Allianz Amphitheater in Richmond, Virginia.

Pollstar has named Capshaw its Manager of the Year an unprecedented six times, including this year. He probably enjoyed that press look more than this one.
